In Him

I woke up this morning, from a restless night of little sleep, with the words to this song scrolling through my mind.

On this stretch of life’s journey, I have found myself in great need of peace, rest and a song to sing in the dark of night. I am thankful that I don’t have to look far to find any of these things they are all resting within my reach in God’s word and at the throne of grace. So, with my heart heavy and my thoughts winding in all directions I draw near and call on Him- trusting that He knows my heart and all of my desires.

Though I cannot make ssense of the circumstances that surround me, I know that His ways are higher and His plans for me are far better than anything that I can conceive on my own- all of His glory.

So I wave the white flag of surrender. NOT my will but yours be done, Lord. And I offer Him thanks for the provisions and strength that He gives for today, and the bright hope for tomorrow. Because God is love!

Surrendered to the Savior,

Melissa

Counting

The book lays open upon her desk. With a pencil in hand, she sits pondering the concepts that are spread across the page before her. From another room I hear her counting as she works her way from left to right across the page, carefully solving each equation that makes up the day’s lesson in second grade math.

A smile bursts across my face as I hear her pause and say,‘six'. The number sparks my memory. For weeks I too have been counting. Counting down the days until creation is awakened from its long winter slumber and is revived again by the warmth of the springtime sun. Yes, only six days to go and it will be spring!

Her counting continue one step higher. From six she climbs to seven. My smile widens as the anticipation within me continues to build. In seven short days I will be reunited in person with a young woman whom I have been blessed to call a dear friend for nearly eight years!

Oh, the joy that is springing up from within as I continue this simple exercise in counting. Count the blessings that my heavenly Father has lovingly wrapped up in the gift of today. With my heart filled with gratitude I offer Him thanks for a select few of the endless number blessings that He has lavishly bestowed on me.

  • the blessing of prayer -both giving it as a gift to others, and receiving its benefits and comfort myself

  • sunshine

  • Daylight savings time

  •  Emails from a trusted friend that bring encouragement a smile to my day

  • Clean Water to quench my thirst

  • Two cans that help me stand up and walk

  •  New shoes

  • The opportunity to surprise others with simple acts of love and kindness.

  • A future that is resting safely and securely in hands of our loving, all knowing God

  • The gift of one more day

The best way to give God thsnks is to live in complete surrender and full obedience to His will no matter the cost.

Lord, teach me to number my days; to use my time wisely for your honor and glory. Open my eyes to see you clearly in the ordinary as well as the extraordinary moments that make up each new day. Help me to fix  my mind on complete surrender and obedience. May lips overflow daily with praise and thanksgiving  for the gift of your Son and all of the blessings that you generously give me  that I am so undeserving of. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Ellie

Born with Spastic Cerebral Palsy, five years ago this beautiful little girl was without hope; a special needs orphan in Korea. Today, through the love of her adoptive family, Ellie Barth is an intellegent, thriving, and very vibrant 8 year old who captures the hearts of all who know her.
Though physically she is largely confined to a wheelchair, and she struggles with limited speech, her spirit soars and her determination is strong. Her courage in the face of her limitations, multiple surgeries, and pain is something to be admired. (This child's strength puts me to shame, and I am more than 3 times her age.)
Tomorrow morning, Ellie will again put her courage proudly on display. Instead of joining her class and playing the Sugarplum Fairy in her school’s Christmas program, she with be undergoing yet another surgery.  A surgery to have a medical pump implanted in her side that will deliver a constant stream of medicine into her spine in hopes of reducing the spasticity throughout her body and bringing greater ease to her mobility and speech.
Last night she beamed with delight as I sat across the table from her, and over a game of Candy Land, we discussed the surgery, the recovery, and what we pray will  be improved quality of life following. She is thrilled with the idea that when all of this is said and done she will most likely have better balance and be able to walk with her walker on a more constant basis.
Will you please join me in praying over Ellie and her medical team though out the next few days? This operation should be quick and it  has great potential of improving so many areas of Ellie’s life. As one who has been through this myself, I also know that there can be complications.
Please pray For:
  • Wisdom for the attending physician
  • A successful surgery
  • That Ellie’s body would remain healthy and not reject the implant
  • That her body will adjust quickly to the medicine so that she can return home
  • An overall Smooth recovery with no complications- spinal headaches are very common after this procedure and they can pose many difficult and painful challenges.

Thank you for bringing Ellie before the Lord  who holds her in His tender care.

God Bless you,

Meissa

Mighty to Save

The lyrics resonated within me as they filled the quiet space around me. “Savior He can move mountains. My God is mighty to save.”

Here I sit facing moutains that are much too high for me to climb. Mountains of  intense physical pain brought about by circumstances beyond my control. Mountains of deep longing, and grief- for loved ones and others who are walking though life enduring hardship and suffering without the comfort of a relationship with God through His son -a relationship that can truly bring hope and peace to the darkest, most painful, and hopeless situations.

As I gaze upon these mountains  I am reminded that noting is too hard for Him!

He who:

Parted the red sea for two million Israelites,

Save Daniel from the Lion’s den,

And David from Goliath.

Turned water into wine,

And a greedy tax collector into a man of overwhelming generosity,

Fed 5000 people with 5 loves and 2 fish,

Walked on the water,

And raised Jesus from the dead.

He has all power to move the mountains in my life and yours.

With a whisper He can calm the raging sea.

With the touch of His had He opened the eyes of the blind, and set captives free.

He can soften the hardest of hearts,

And open the eyes of those who have been blinded by this world.

Those who have been held captive by religion can be set fee to an intimate relationship with Him.

It is not His will that any should perish, but for all to come to repentance. ( 2 Peter 1:9)

Truly, He is mighty to save!

“His love is heart changing, mind healing, soul soothing.”-Jill Samter

May we live in such a way that we reflect Him at all times- freely giving His compassion, mercy and love to all- encouraging one another, and praying fervently for the salvation of those who are living without Him today.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Faithful Servants

Myself with the Howerton's
In 2001 Baron and Joyce Howerton picked up their family and left the comfort and familiarity of life in American to embrace God’s call on their lives to step into the fields, white with harvest in Romania. For the past 9 years this family has been faithfully following the Lord’s lead as they have planted a church, reached out to the community, meeting the needs of the less fortunate, and most recently have begun pouring themselves in the lives of children who have been left abandoned in a government institution.

Two years ago they heard God’s call on their lives to adopt, and they opened their hearts and their home to a set of Romanian twins. Today, though their adoption is not yet final, the twins are thriving as they are developing greater academic skills, and are learning what it means to truly be welcomed into a family and unconditionally loved- not only by their parents and siblings, but by God who created them, knows them by name, has a place for them at His family table, and a plan for their lives.

From the moment I met this family last November, when I had the privilege of bringing them Christmas gifts and well loved treats from the states, they inspired me with their dedication to ministry. All six of their children warmed my heart. It is truly a privilege to know them, and to come along side them in prayer and any encouragement that I can offer.

I would love to be on the next flight to Romania, and I am fervently praying for another open door and opportunity for ministry, but until the Lord provides one I will be faithful in the sincere and joyful act of prayer.

Will you please join me in praying for the Howerton’s at they continue to pour themselves out and share the truth, hope, and joy of the gospel with the hurting, lost and seeking souls of Lugoj, Romania. Please pray for their family, their church and all those whom they serve. Please also for the finalization of the twins’ adoption. Their final court date is November 16, 2010. To God be the Glory!

Here are the twins and their younger brother singing “The Crayon Box Song”

I hope this warms your heart today as it did mine. Enjoy!

"The Crayon Box Song"

When I was just a little child

No higher than your knee,

My mother bought a box of crayons,

Just for me.

I picked them up and I opened them up

And I looked way down inside,

And the colors there reminded me

Of Jesus when He died.

O… Red is the color of the blood that He shed,

Brown is for the crown of thorns they laid upon His head.

Blue is for royalty! In Heaven He does dwell;

And yellow is for the Christian who's afraid to tell.

I colored and I colored

'Til the crayons were all gone,

And though I am much older now,

The mem'ry lingers on.

And when I see a little child

With crayon box in hand,

I tell them what they mean to me

And hope they'll understand.

O… Red is the color of the blood that He shed,

Brown is for the crown of thorns they laid upon His head.

Blue is for royalty! In Heaven He does dwell;

And yellow is for the Christian who's afraid to tell.

Afraid to tell of a Savior

Who died on Calvary,

He died for lowly sinners

Just like you and me;

And someday soon He's coming back

To be our King,

And the colors of the crayon box

We will sing!

O… Red is the color of the blood that He shed,

Brown is for the crown of thorns they laid upon His head.

Blue is for royalty! In Heaven He does dwell;

And yellow is for the Christian who's afraid to tell.

So, don't you be a Christian, who's afraid to tell!

"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Lexi's New song

God is pouring a new song into the heart of Lexi. I just had to share it with you. This is a rough draft. The song may be changed some before it is complete, but it is beautiful, and it holds a good message.

Here is the song's choruses:

"I'm staring at the open sky

I'm running to your open arms

You're the one who carries me out of the dark

I'm breathin' in your every word

I want it done and not just heard

I'm gonna stand up for what is right

And tell the world that you are God."

Lord, pour your word deep into my heart- that through my life story, my actions, and my words the world will see that you are God.

Will you join me in praying for Lexi as she continues to use her God given talent to glorify the Lord? You can leave Lexi some feedback and encouragement about her song here.

God Bless You,

Melissa

In You Alone

How comforting to know that no matter what we face, when our faith is grounded in a relationship Christ, we are safe. Our past, present, and future are held in the palms of His loving hands. He will meet us in the middle of every situation, and sustain us by His grace. "Life’s worst curve balls can produce God’s greatest glory. He wins, every time.-" Sara May this truth cause us to rejoice, no matter where we find ourselves today.

If you would, please read this post and pray for this little, boy who is about to embark on the fight of his life after having a critical surgery on Monday morning. Thank you for putting love in action and praying for this family!

Trusting In God's Love and Grace,

Melissa

PS. As some of you have noticed, I have changed the title of my blog. I am currently looking for a header/ template to better match the title.  If you have any ideas as to where I might find one please leave a comment and let me know. Thank you for your help!

Please pray for Brett

Two weeks ago I asked you to pray for Brett Cochran, a 10 year old boy who suffers from Mitochondrial Disease- the son of a dear friend. For those of you who may have never heard this disease, or maybe you have, but don’t know exactly what it is.

“Imagine if you will a major city with half its power plants shut down. At best, such conditions would produce a "brown out" with large sections of the city working far below optimum efficiency. Now imagine your body with one-half of its energy producing facilities shut down. The brain would be impaired, vision would be dim, muscles would twitch spastically or would be too weak to allow your body to walk or write, your heart would be weakened, and you would not be able to eat and digest your food.”- United Mitochondrial Disease foundation This is what life looks like for thousands of people affected with Mitochondrial disease

Mitochondrial diseases (Mito) are a group of  diseases that results from failures in the body’s mitochondria, which are specialized compartment present in every white blood cell in the body. Mitochondria are responsible for the production of well over 90% of the energy needed for body to sustain life and support growth. When they fail, less and less energy is produced within the cell. Cell injury and even cell death will follow.

As this process is repeated throughout the body, entire systems will begin to fail, and the life of the person in whom this is happening becomes severely compromised. This progressive compromise often leads to an early death. As a result diseases primarily affect children. Many Children who are diagnosed with Mitochondrial disease before the age of 10 will never reach their teenage years.

Due to their complex nature, and the diverse range of symptoms that a person may exhibit, these diseases are often misdiagnosed. Once a person is given the diagnosis of a Mitochondrial disease only one thing is certain. Time is of the essence.

There are no cures for these diseases, and no way to tell exactly how many of the body's cells are affected. As such, there are no life expectancy guidelines to follow. All these families can do is treat the symptoms as best as possible as they arise, and enjoy the gift of life that is wrapped within each fleeting moment.

Protecting and enjoying the gift of Brett’s life is something that his parents have been faithfully doing since Brett received his diagnosis at the age of three. Staying on top of his condition, and making sure that his critical moment by moment needs are met is an endless task that requires much sacrifice.

Because of his very complex and fragile condition Brett’s immune system has been severally compromised, so fighting common illnesses such as a cold, or a flue are much more difficult, and can be life threatening for him. As a result, Brett often spends well over 100 days a year in the hospital.

From very early in his journey with Mito, Brett has suffered from serious respiratory challenges. Often these challenges are the very things that have landed him in the hospital fighting for his life on several different occasions. It was these challenges that brought him by ambulance to the ER last month. He has been fighting for recovery in the hospital ever since.

This lengthy hospital admission has led Brett’s parents to have to take a very long, hard look at what the future will hold for their son, and too consider how they should proceed with his long-term care. This very careful and prayerful evaluation has led them to make the decision that it is in Brett’s best interest to be given a tracheotomy to help reduce his difficulty in breathing and to make cleaning his airway much easier.

As you can imagine, this decision was not an easy one for his parents to come to. The risks involved in this surgery are very serious and can be life threatening. For Brett there is even greater concern because he does not respond to anesthesia very well at all.

At the present time Brett’s medical team is quickly moving forward with all of the pre-op testing and evaluations that must be completed before surgery can take place. His surgery is scheduled for some time on Monday, October  25th.

Your prayers right now are critical!

Brett will have to be weaned from many of the medicines that he is on prior to surgery, and he can have no food for while. This is a huge risk for him. Please pray!

Please pray:

1. For Brett’s safety and protection throughout this entire process.

2. For the guidance, wisdom, and skills of his medical team. For Brett’s parents to know the will God has for their son as they move forward.( If this is not God’s will may He make that very clear to them in this preparation process.)

3. For peace that surpasses understanding as his parents endure the weight of this procedure and trust God with the outcome.

4. For smooth recovery with no complication.

5. For improved quality of life for Brett.

6. For the will of God done in Brett’s life- that He might continue to glorified through Brett. His story that has touched the lives of so many!

If you would, please pray for all those who love Brett and his family from a distance- as we wait for news and trust God to provide the best in this situation. Speaking for myself, I can say that I am at peace knowing that God’s hand is on every aspect of this situation. He breathed life into Brett and He has a perfect plan that He is working to completion in Brett’s life. I know that God will continue to provide for Brett and his family in every way.

My heart aches with the immense suffering that that precious little boy has had to endure throughout his entire life. Five years ago, through circumstances that only God could orchestrate, I was given the opportunity to step though the door of Brett’s life. I can honestly say that my life has never been the same since! It is very difficult be halfway across the country form them right now.

Thank you for taking to the time to pray!

Trusting in God's Love and Grace,

Melissa
